"Forgotten" play The Swamp Dwellers receives Sheffield revival after over half a century

A Resurfacing of Wole Soyinka’s The Swamp Dwellers

The Swamp Dwellers, a play by Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, returns to the UK stage after more than fifty years. Set in the Niger Delta during the late 1950s, the narrative centres on an ageing couple living precariously in a hut above a swamp, grappling with environmental decline and personal loss. Their fragile existence is disrupted by the unexpected return of one of their twin sons, whose arrival brings unresolved tensions to the fore. The story unfolds quietly, illuminating the struggles of survival amid a landscape pushed beyond its limits.

Contemporary Resonance in a Climate Emergency

Dr Mojisola Kareem, artistic director of Utopia Theatre, has led the revival of this 1958 work, describing it as one of Soyinka’s most “quietly powerful plays.” Despite its age, the play’s themes resonate strongly with today’s global challenges. Dr Kareem highlights the play’s exploration of migration, environmental degradation, economic hardship, and fractured communities as particularly relevant amid ongoing climate anxiety and social inequality. The narrative’s focus on the tension between tradition and modernity continues to reflect contemporary realities across diverse societies.

Production Details and Cast

The production features a cast of eight, including notable actors such as Jude Akuwudike, Urielle Klein-Mekongo, Theo Ogundipe, Obi Maduegbuna, drummer Mr Culture, and Joshua Roberts-Mensah. Two local community members, Omobola Akanbi among them, also join the ensemble. The play will be performed in the round at Utopia Theatre’s venue in Sheffield city centre, offering an intimate theatrical experience with a limited audience capacity of 50 per performance. The one-act play runs for approximately 70 minutes without an interval.

Historical Context and Significance

The Swamp Dwellers was last staged in 1975 at the Keskidee Arts Centre in Islington, north London, under the direction of Nigerian-born playwright Yemi Ajibade. Dr Kareem emphasises the enduring relevance of Soyinka’s work, noting that despite the passage of decades, the issues portrayed remain largely unchanged. The play reflects on the disillusionment of youth migrating to cities, the exploitation by political and spiritual leaders, and the ongoing damage to land and communities caused by powerful interests.
