Sheffield Schoolchildren Raise £440 for Community Food Project
Schoolchildren from four Sheffield primary schools raised £440 for a community food project after selling produce they had grown themselves at Moor Market.
The young traders took over part of the market on Wednesday, July 15, offering shoppers a range of fruit, vegetables, plants and homemade food produced during the spring and summer terms.
The event formed part of Young Marketeers, a food education programme run by the charity School Food Matters.
Despite recent heatwaves, the pupils successfully grew potatoes, courgettes, kale, lettuce, onions, rosemary, redcurrants and sunflower plants with support from school staff and specialist gardeners.
Homemade bread, scones and duck eggs were also sold during the event, with all £440 raised going to Sheffield's Open Kitchen Social Club.
The programme teaches children how to grow food from seed while helping them develop teamwork, enterprise, communication and marketing skills.
Throughout the day, the pupils spoke with shoppers, promoted their stalls and sold the produce they had grown.
One child said: "I just can't stop smiling!"
Another said: "I couldn't believe it when we dug up the potatoes. There were so many!"
